Climate Safe Neighborhoods

Climate Safe Neighborhoods is a national effort to identify neighborhoods that are more vulnerable to the effects of climate change because of racial and social injustices, spread awareness and educate residents in those neighborhoods, and ignite action towards climate resilience. Climate Safe Neighborhoods explores the relationship between historical race-based housing segregation and the current and predicted impacts of climate change. Effective community engagement is important for creating better policies and programs, addressing inequality, and building resilient communities.

THE CSN PARTNERSHIP

The Climate Safe Neighborhoods Partnership is a joint effort between Groundwork Ohio River Valley and Green Umbrella. The Partnership developed equitable community engagement processes that center the voices and priorities of historically underserved communities in climate planning. Together Groundwork and Green Umbrella also support the implementation of neighborhood-level projects, and the incorporation of climate justice into regional policies and government activities.

Collaborating with local city officials and community organizations, they establish neighborhood Climate Advisory Groups to address extreme heat and flooding, support community leaders in leadership development in equitable climate planning, and influence action on climate justice initiatives identified.
